Specimen Collection

The goal of urine drug testing (UDT) in the clinical setting is to assure patient compliance, monitor drug levels in the body, and ultimately, improve treatment outcomes.

Orbit Labs utilizes two analytical technologies for reporting qualitative and quantitative results: EIA and LC-MS. Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA) is used initially to screen urine samples for different categories of drugs present in the body (i.e. amphetamines, benzodiazepines, and opiates). Liquid chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) then pinpoints the exact drug and drug concentration (i.e. oxycodone at 150 ng/mL).

Adulteration of patient samples is prevented by measuring the urine’s temperature, pH, specific gravity, creatinine concentration, and presence of oxidants. If a sample is suspected of being tampered with, a new specimen is collected in a separate container and both samples are sent to the lab for analysis. Specimens are kept in the lab for two weeks, should additional testing be requested.

Normal Characteristics of Urine:

·         Temperature = 90 F to 100 F within 4 minutes of voiding.

·         pH = 4.5 to 8.0

·         Creatinine = >20 mg/dL

·         Specific gravity = >1.00

The goal of urine drug testing (UDT) in the clinical setting is to assure patient compliance, monitor drug levels in the body, and ultimately, improve treatment outcomes.
